The history of this structure dates back to the 1960s. It was originally named the Ocracoke Motel and was constructed with materials available at that time from leftover ship wreck lumber.
The owners of this property have only changed six times in its history. In true Ocracoke fashion of recycling and reusing, the buildings were moved from across island during renovations. In the early 1980s, an upstairs section was added for more rooms. In 1991, a swimming pool was added to give guests an extra treat during their vacation.
Roger Garrish, owner from 1993-2003, still works at the front desk and takes pride in treating guests with true island hospitality. He points out the 100% sanitation grade – a rating that has been held at the Sand Dollar Motel for over 15 years.
